Students in pajamas standing with books

Washington Street School hosted a Reading Spirit Week, from Jan. 17-20, to officially launch its Wildly Important Goal for students to read a combined 100 million words by the end of the school year.

The Reading Spirit Week included: DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) Time Day, A Spotlight on Reading Day (reading with a flashlight in class), We’re Crazy About Reading Day (crazy socks and teacher swap) and Snuggle Up with a Great Book Day (students wore pajamas to school).

For students in grades 2-6, words will be counted using the "Word Report" from Accelerated Reader; and, for students in grades K-1, words will be counted by multiplying the number of books read by a common factor.Progress will be displayed on grade-level bulletin boards, which will be updated by grade-level captains.
