The district recognized the dedication and contributions of its board of education, transportation department, new staff members and a courageous student during its board of education meeting on Oct. 7.
In celebration of School Board Recognition Week, observed this year Oct. 12-16, district leaders, staff and students joined together to honor the board of education for its commitment and service to the Franklin Square school community.
“These five individuals dedicate countless hours to support our students, our families and, really, the broader community; all – people don’t realize – without any compensation,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jared Bloom said. “On behalf of the district, I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our board members.”
Representatives from the Franklin Square Teachers’ Association continued the celebration by thanking the board members for the time, energy and care they invest in supporting students, staff and families. As a token of appreciation, they presented each board member with a gift bag. Polk Street School Assistant Principal Dominic Gobbo and John Street School Assistant Principal Daphne Pascal-Patillo also spoke on behalf of the district’s administrative team, expressing their gratitude and presenting each board member with a mum plant.
Students shared their appreciation, as well. John Street School fourth graders read an acrostic poem honoring the board of education, which was framed and presented to each board member. Students from Polk Street School and Washington Street School also created video presentations highlighting what they love about their schools and thanking the board for its continued support.
Following the recognition ceremony, Dr. Bloom highlighted a Polk Street School student for an extraordinary act of bravery over the summer. Drawing upon skills learned through Boy Scouts training, Henry Herzog acted quickly to help save the life of a camp counselor. In recognition of his courage, composure and decisive actions, he was presented with the district’s Hero Award.
The district also celebrated its transportation department, which was recognized for the second consecutive year as one of the top transportation programs in North America. The recognition reflects the team’s ongoing commitment to safety, efficiency and service for Franklin Square students and families.
The evening concluded with the introduction of the district’s newest staff members. Dr. Bloom formally welcomed and congratulated those in attendance.
