Student giving presentation on China.

In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, fifth graders in Ms. Alvarado and Mr. Meliere’s class at Washington Street School took part in a special project celebrating the many cultures that make up their school community. Through research and Canva presentations, students explored their family backgrounds and learned more about their heritage.

As part of the project, titled “Celebrating Our Diversity: Many Cultures, One America,” students researched the history and symbolism behind their countries’ flags, highlighting nations such as Bangladesh, Italy, Greece, Japan, Brazil and China. They also participated in a Cultural Showcase, sharing meaningful artifacts, traditional attire, foods and family keepsakes that reflected their unique identities.

The project began with discussions about the Pledge of Allegiance, the shared values that connect Americans from all backgrounds and the significance of Hispanic Heritage Month. As they explored and celebrated the many cultures that help shape the nation, students gained a deeper appreciation for the traditions, experiences and perspectives that contribute to the country's identity as a melting pot.
