To commemorate World Peace Day on Sept. 21, John Street School held its annual Pinwheels for Peace celebration on Sept. 17. The event has been organized by art teacher Christine Randazzo for the past 21 years.
Pinwheels for Peace is an international art and environmental project celebrated each year on Sept. 21. Students around the world express their hopes, dreams and feelings about peace by creating pinwheels and displaying them together as a collective statement. On this day, their messages are symbolically united with those of children worldwide, promoting peace, understanding and unity.
In preparation for this year's event, students colored the word “peace” during art classes as a pledge to help create a more peaceful world. They also listened to inspiring songs about peace in music class.
During the celebration, each student planted a pinwheel on the front lawn of the school, where the pinwheels were arranged in the shape of a peace sign. Students also signed the Peace Pledge, reaffirming their commitment to kindness, respect and peace in their school and community.
