Franklin Square Union Free School District proudly celebrated the artistic accomplishments of its students, along with this year’s SCOPE award recipient, during the board of education meeting on April 14.
Polk Street School sixth grader Grace Stojanowski and John Street School fifth grader Emilia Penagos Kalontarov were recognized for their participation in the Creative Communication Poetry Contest, highlighting their creativity and dedication to writing. In December, students were given the opportunity to submit original work to Creative Communication: Poetic Power to potentially qualify to be published in an anthology this coming fall. Stojanowski and Kalontarov each had their poems selected to be published.
John Street School sixth graders Rayhan Poyyathuruthy, Justin Sabesan and Andrew Spinelli were also honored for their collaborative Zentangle art project, in which they created intricate black-and-white designs using marker and yarn. Their artwork is now on display in the first-floor hallway.
Following the student recognitions, Marge Kelly was presented with a SCOPE Award for Community Service, as she was unable to attend the official awards ceremony. As president of the Community League of Garden City South, Ms. Kelly organizes an annual holiday toy drive. This year’s effort was especially impactful, with donations so abundant that a truck was needed to transport them.
