John Street School second graders in Ms. Derby’s class recently enjoyed a science, reading and social-emotional learning lesson. They listened to a read-aloud of “My Mouth is a Volcano!” by Julia Cook, which uses humor and relatable situations to help children learn strategies for self-control, patience and respectful communication.
The students worked to create their own volcanoes, using baking soda, vinegar and party hats. The hands-on activity helped the students visually understand how once something builds up, it can be hard to stop; just like words when we feel the urge to interrupt.
The class then connected this experience back to the story and discussed practical strategies they can use in the classroom and beyond.
