John Street School marked Veterans Day on Nov. 12 with an assembly, “A Morning of Honor, A Lifetime of Gratitude,” that brought local veterans and students together for an uplifting celebration highlighted by music and heartfelt remarks. The first assembly welcomed students in grades K-2, while the second was held for grades 3-6.
As veterans entered the gymnasium to a drum cadence performed by band students onstage, students and staff rose to their feet. A group of students then sang the National Anthem, led by the music teacher Alexa Gottesman.
“As we celebrate this important day, we also take time to reflect on the meaning of service, sacrifice and the importance of community,” Principal Thomas Riccobono said. “Today, we are joined by veterans who have made their own contributions to our nation’s history. Let’s remember that their sacrifices have allowed us to enjoy the freedoms and opportunities we have today.”
Following the introduction of each honored guest by Assistant Principal Jung Lee, the room held a moment of silence for those who have passed, and a rendition of “Taps” was played by a band student and band teacher Larry Rizzo.
During both assemblies, chosen students stepped forward to express their gratitude to veterans through personal messages. The event wrapped up with a spirited sing-along, as students, joined by Ms. Gottesman, honored each military branch with its respective song and “This Land Is Your Land.”
