Washington Street School celebrated its annual Veterans Day Assembly, “A Morning of Honor, A Lifetime of Gratitude,” on Nov. 7, bringing together local veterans and the school community for a heartfelt tribute filled with music and words of appreciation.
As the honored guests entered the gymnasium, students cheered and waved handmade artwork and signs to welcome them. The event opened with the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem, performed by music teacher Kelly Tesar.
Principal John Stella explained the origins of Veterans Day and the branches of military the day recognizes. “Today, we honor and remember all of the veterans and thank you for the selfless sacrifices you made to ensure the freedom we enjoy today,” he said. “On behalf of Washington Street School, we thank all of our veterans here today.”
Each veteran was then introduced individually by Assistant Principal Dominic Gobbo before the audience observed a moment of silence to remember those who have passed. The solemn reflection was followed by a performance of “Taps” by students in the school band and band teacher Jason O’Connor. Students in grades 3-6 took to the stage next to share poems and letters they had written in appreciation of veterans’ service.
The assembly concluded with Ms. Tesar leading a sing-along of songs representing each branch of the military.
