Superintendent's comments about state assessments...
The Commissioner of Education in the State of New York and his staff predicted a drop in proficiency rates by over 30% across the state as early as last November….before the tests were designed. Commissioner King’s memo to parents and families announcing the release of test scores assures us our results were expected and planned due to the shift to Common Core assessments. He stated, “I want to make it very clear that the change in test scores (including, possibly, one in your child’s score) does not mean that students are learning less or that teachers and schools are performing worse than last year. Proficiency rates – the percentage of students meeting or exceeding the standards – on the new Common Core assessments cannot be compared with last year’s proficiency results since the old scores are from an old test based on the former standards.”
Our staff and the Board of Education agree that our students need to be prepared for college and careers. We are investing in new programs and new technology to raise the bar for proficiency within our classrooms. Students require different skills in today’s world to be successful in college and beyond. However, a summative exam designed purposefully to reduce proficiency rates, does not reveal the whole story of the miracle of growth occurring in our classrooms every day.
In ancient China, people cursed each other with the saying, “May you live in interesting times.” We are certainly living in interesting times regarding public education. Those of us dedicated to children prefer to weigh on our students’ performance in our classrooms equally to the State’s summative assessments. We believe it is a blessing, not a curse, at the local level to live in interesting times. When I visit classrooms, there is nothing more interesting than hearing our students proudly share stories about their work. Sarah McLaughlin once sang a song entitled “Ordinary Miracle”. We witness ordinary miracles every day in our schools. Some times it is the miracle of instruction; other times the miracle of community. It is never the miracle of a proficiency score on a state test designed to lower the number of children deemed to be proficient.
We continue to pledge our best efforts to the community in service to your children. We will increase our proficiency rates as the years go by as we have always done. More importantly, we will continue to educate our children to be successful members of our society….as we have always done.
