Washington Street School fourth grade students combined engineering, coding and collaboration skills through an engaging unit focused on designing and programming carnival-style games. As part of the hands-on learning experience, students were tasked with building a miniature golf game and creating a program that can help players achieve a hole-in-one.
Using LEGO Education SPIKE Essential kits, students worked in teams to design, construct and code their games using block-based programming. After building their mini golf course, students brought their creations to life by coding interactive features such as lights, sounds and movement, enhancing the overall player experience.
Coding sessions are led by districtwide coding teacher Mrs. Hennessy and take place once every five weeks, providing students with regular opportunities to strengthen their coding, collaboration and problem-solving skills through engaging hands-on projects.
